The Best Edinburgh Tours, Ranked

Twenty-eight experiences, in the order we would book them.

We ranked these by a simple test: if a friend were coming to Edinburgh for the first time, what would we tell them to book, and in what order? Things that sell out and things you cannot do alone come first; nice-to-haves follow.

Ratings and review counts are from GetYourGuide at the time of writing; prices are indicative “from” prices in euros and will be shown in your own currency when you click through.

How to combine them

A good first-timer’s plan is the castle tour on the first morning, an Old Town or Harry Potter walk the same afternoon and a ghost tour that evening. On day two, visit Holyrood and add a whisky experience. Keep a third or fourth day for a Highlands day trip. Our travel guide has full itineraries.

What we left out

Edinburgh has hundreds of bookable activities. We have left out near-duplicates of the tours above, products with few reviews, and private tours whose price depends on group size. The live widget on the tours page shows the full range.

Plan your Edinburgh trip

Castle tickets sell out. Book before you fly.

Edinburgh Castle, Mary King’s Close and the best Highland day trips run on timed slots that fill up in summer and in August’s festival weeks. Compare and reserve in a couple of taps.

Good to know

Best Edinburgh tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the number one tour in Edinburgh?

For most first-time visitors it is a guided tour of Edinburgh Castle with the ticket included. It is the city’s main sight, and the one most likely to sell out.

Which ghost tour is best?

The haunted vaults and graveyard tour is the best all-rounder. Choose the underground vaults tour for something shorter, or the Ghost Bus if you would rather laugh than shiver.

Which whisky experience should I choose?

The Scotch Whisky Experience is the traditional introduction, next to the castle. Johnnie Walker Princes Street is newer, more theatrical and has the better bar. Enthusiasts often do both.

Are Harry Potter tours suitable for people who have not read the books?

Yes. They are really Old Town walks with a theme, and the guides cover plenty of general history.
